Digital Media Developer
CTSi | 2001 - 2008

My time at CTSi coincided with the explosive growth of the internet and the transition from traditional print media to digital. While the web had been around long enough for the dotcom bubble to form and burst, online marketing was in its infancy and social media was just emerging. Responsive web design wouldn't be defined until 2010 and email marketing was the Wild West—CANSPAM came around in 2003. Adobe didn't own everything, QuarkXPress ruled desktop publishing, and we still delivered files on Syquest. In this dynamic environment, I was a Swiss Army Knife digital designer, full-stack web developer, systems administrator, network security monitor, and email marketing manager. It was a tremendous opportunity to dive into and cut my teeth on a broad range of emerging and maturing technologies.

Education

BA—Fine Art
San Diego State University | 1992

My education was a journey of passion over practicality. With an interest in early computing, I started in computer sciences. This was a time when CRTs were green or amber and high-level programming languages were in their infancy. Being a bit of an immediate gratification kind of person, writing endless lines of opcode to perform the simplest tasks left me re-evaluating my life choices. This soul-searching led to pivot to my real passion—art and design.

My degree in fine art with an emphasis in printmaking reflects my love of art with a passion for technical processes. The printmaking process I focused on was traditional stone lithography. Requiring careful preparation and attention to detail, both the technical skill required, and wide range of techniques appealed to my creative and nerdy personality.

My passion for technology remains and my early interest in programming has fueled my continued self-education in web design, development, and microcontrollers.
